It’s all about John Bercow

The papers, news channels and radio stations are full of yesterday’s activities in the Houses of Parliament. God, what a flurry of excitement! Yes, yesterday John Bercow expressed his opinion that he was strongly opposed to Donald Trump addressing parliament when he makes his eventual UK visit {introduce fanfare here}.

Unless you live under a rock, you will already know all about this. It’s a heart-warming story about our great British institution sticking up for the great British values of anti-sexism, anti-racism, anti-tyranny, equality, fairness….. Fabulous click me stuff for the papers, a veritable treat for the advertisers. Populist news is so now!

( As a quick aside to this point, I find it deeply ironic that Mr Bercow didn’t come down a bit harder on Nicholas Soames last week when he chose to woof-woof at Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh – wrong kind of sexism, maybe?  That’s another story for another day).

The Bercow fiasco is an interesting dinner party story, it’s amusing, it annoyed Katie Hopkins, Nigel Farage, Piers Morgan and other right wing nutters and sycophants (which is always a bonus) and it got people talking politics, or should I say tittle-tattling about politics. Fabulous stuff!

At this point you could be forgiven for assuming that this is all that happened in the HoC yesterday. Certainly a quick scan of the papers, especially the Welsh ones, presents this as being the case.

As salacious and amusing as the Bercow episode is, however, it’s nothing more than a hyped up aside to the real news of the day, namely that the Tories, in an episode of spiteful ‘control-gone-mad’, they turned Wales down and did us over. They sold us down the river without a backward glance. This should be our political headline of the day, shouldn’t it, and yet, for whatever reason, there’s not so much as a single comment from a single commentator on any mainstream Welsh platform this morning. Is this confusing? It should be because lies and manipulations have a tendency to be mind fucks. Am I brazen and paranoid to suggest that the withholding of this news is deliberate and that there are bigger forces at play here? No, I don’t think so. Nobody can protest about things they don’t know about and it serves the Establishment well to keep Wales in the dark.

Now we all surely remember the pre-Brexit promises made by the leave campaigners, don’t we? We must do because they were accompanied with much pomp and fanfare and I am pretty sure that many in Wales will have voted leave as a consequence. Who amongst us doesn’t remember Andrew RT Davies promising that Wales will not be a penny poorer post Brexit and that he could guarantee that we would receive the same degree of funding out of the EU that we get as members? I remember it all so clearly, just as I remember thinking that a fat puppet like him, especially a confused one who has no substance, would never have the power to ensure the assurance of that promise. Others, meanwhile, believed him. In his defence, I think he actually believed it himself. My suspicion is that he was a little bit feted and courted during the Brexit campaign and got to believing in his own self importance. Vain people are easily duped.

Of course I was right to mistrust these poker-faced Tory words, as were so many others, because we know that a party as unscrupulous as the Tories will spin on a penny if they can. Plaid Cymru know it too which is why, last night, they tabled an amendment to Theresa May’s empty Brexit bill – an amendment which sought an assurance and a promise that the government would fulfil its obligation to Wales.

Following a vote, this amendment was rejected by 330 to 267. Wales was betrayed by Westminster, that great institution which only hours earlier had echoed to applause at John Bercow’s proclamations about fairness and equality. Most of these votes will inevitably have come from the Tories. We wait and see who else voted against us.

So what you won’t see in today’s Welsh newspapers, hear on our news or be invited to discuss on any radio phone-in are your views on the empty promises made to Wales by the Tories and subsequently withdrawn once we had been ensnared. You won’t hear or read about that in today’s Welsh press because to highlight this Westminster toxicity would be to raise questions about our place in the UK.  Well last night Westminster told us our place, and it’s at the bottom of the pecking order. We are fodder and we are disposable.

Yesterday in Westminster John Bercow spoke about British values. Yesterday in Westminster, we learnt that Wales is worth nothing and that our devolution is very much under threat. Those are the values which the leave voters and Tories have imposed upon our great country. These subjects are news worthy and in the absence of media interest, we need to be sharing this information ourselves.

We really need to start discussing independence too.

FOOTNOTE:

ANDREW RT DAVIES HAS BEEN VERY VOCAL POST BREXIT. PUFFED UP WITH SELF IMPORTANCE, HE HAS THRUST HIMSELF IN FRONT OF EVERY PASSING CAMERA AND MICROPHONE AT EVERY LAST OPPORTUNITY. HE HAS STRUTTED AND SWAGGERED THE LENGTH AND BREADTH OF WALES LIKE THE CAT THAT GOT THE CREAM AND RIDICULED THOSE OF US WHO HAD NO FAITH IN HIM OR HIS PARTY.

HE MUST BE IN HIDING TODAY BECAUSE SEVERAL NEWS REPORTS ON, THERE’S NOT A PEEP FROM THE MOUTH OF HE’WHO-MUST-BE-LISTENED-TO. NADA! FOR A MAN WHO SPENT THE PAST SIX MONTHS PUMMELLING HIS OWN CHEST, HIS SILENCE IS CONFUSING. IS HE KEEPING HIS HEAD DOWN TODAY BECAUSE HE KNOWS THAT HE HAS LET WALES DOWN? OR IS HE HIDING THE TEARS AS REALISATION HITS HOME THAT HE IS CONSIDERED AS WORTHLESS AND DISPOSABLE AS THE REST OF US? I’M HOPING FOR OPTION 2
